Almaty in one day: what to see and in what order
One day in Almaty means a park and a cathedral downtown, two museums, the Medeu skating rink and sunset on Kok-Tobe. A ready-made route with time for every stop and tips on not losing half the day in traffic.

Almaty is easy to read: the city lies on a slope, north is lower, south is higher, and the mountains are visible from almost any crossroads. So a one-day route naturally runs uphill, from the old centre to the foothills, so you end the day above the city.
Morning: the old centre
Start in Panfilov Park, the oldest park in the city, quiet in the morning. In its centre stands Ascension Cathedral: a wooden building from 1907, put together without a single nail and still standing after the 1911 earthquake. Visitors are welcome outside services; half an hour is enough.
Two steps away is the Museum of Folk Musical Instruments in an old timber house. Small and intimate, with recordings of the dombra and kobyz. Allow an hour.
Midday: museums at the foot of the mountains
Then head south to the Samal district. The Central State Museum under its big dome tells the country's story from Saka burial mounds to the twentieth century; the star exhibit is the Golden Man. Allow two hours. If painting interests you more than history, swap it for the Kasteyev Museum of Arts.

Afternoon: Medeu
Bus no. 12 runs from Dostyk Avenue up to Medeu, the high-altitude skating rink at 1,691 m. In winter people skate; in summer they climb the 842 steps of the mudflow dam for a view down the gorge. The trip from the city takes an hour to an hour and a half each way, so allow two to three hours in total. Details are in our guide to Medeu and Shymbulak.
Evening: Kok-Tobe
End the day on Kok-Tobe. The cable car starts on Dostyk Avenue by the Kazakhstan Hotel and lifts you onto the hill above the city in a few minutes. Arrive an hour before sunset: first the mountains in evening light, then the city lights. There are cafes, a Ferris wheel and a small zoo at the top, and you can ride down after dark.
Making it fit
- Do not leave museums for after three: most close at 18:00 and last entry is earlier.
- Between the centre and Medeu take a taxi or bus no. 12; the Medeu car park fills up by noon at weekends.
